  • The Independent, UK, Jan 2006 "The ultimate retreat for the ethically minded, Ni'tun's four cool, thatched cabanas feature traditionally plastered walls, indigenous textiles and views of either the neighbouring forest or lakeside. Guests also have the chance to try jungle-trekking, bird-watching, horse-riding or just swimming in the jade-coloured adjacent waters. Set on the shores of Lake Peten Itza, about three kilometres from San Andres, the fact that the property is reached by boat doesn't stop guests from venturing out. Nearby attractions include the ancient Mayan city of Tikal, several natural parks and a community-run medicinal plant project, though Ni'tun's open-sided bar and restaurant are equally worthy of a visit." Daily Telegraph, UK. May 2003: "Bernie took us to a beautiful Mayan ruin close to nearby Lake Yaxha. We were the only people there, and ended up sitting on top of a high burial mound drinking cold white wine and eating Chinese pears while the sun set behind the lagoon and electric-blue parrots and toucans swooped beneath us. All you could see in every direction was jungle, and the only noise was the terrifying sound of howler monkeys - like dinosaurs giving birth.

It was one of the most thrilling experiences of my life - although the walk back through the jungle in the dark looking out for boa constrictors and jaguars was stomach-churning. During the drive home there was an electric storm, and as we stopped to watch it we were sluiced by a cloud of fireflies." Imogen Stubbs

"My tensions slid away as I discovered the magical essence of Ni'tun Lodge, on Lake Peten-Itza, near the Mayan site of Tikal in Guatemala. With its superb view overlooking a crystal clear lake, the eco-friendly lodge blends into its natural environment. Rock, sand, wood and water have been combined, using the building techniques of the early Mayans, to make walls that have assumed an art form. The living-dining area at the heart of the lodge is open and airy, cooled by a heavy, palm-thatched roof and shaded by thick green leaves of strategically placed giant ceiba, chicle and palm trees."
