Alastair Sawday's Green Places to Stay: "In a clearing in a jungle, where hummingbirds hum and raptors soar overhead, is an intimate, peaceful eco lodge. Rob and Marta, fun and full of energy, came here three years ago and are passionate about this unspoilt corner of Belize, home to the English-speaking Maya. Committed but laid back, they have an excellent working relationship with their Maya staff and foster local enterprises (and you can visit village homes and try your hand at making tortillas). Six cabanas are dotted alongside the Rio Grande, each private, each an amble from the lodge where food, drink, internet and pool beckon. Octagonal in design to catch the breezes, your rooms are simple, spacious and smart. Magical open showers face compost-fed private gardens, laundry is line-dried, hammocks grace verandas and food is as delicious as you'd expect. At sunset flocks of parrots fly overhead, and exotic moths and butterflies descend. Superb."
Frommer's: "This comfortable nature lodge caters to ecotourists and those looking to explore the nearby Mayan ruins and villages, and is set on the banks of the Río Grande, just outside the village of Big Falls. The six individual cabins all overlook the river and feature high thatched ceilings, large windows providing plenty of cross-ventilation, and cool rustic tile floors. Each comes with a large covered veranda equipped with a hammock for lazing away and watching the river flow. Although there's electricity here, at night the light is provided by kerosene lanterns. There's good-size outdoor pool on the broad lawn outside the main lodge, and a host of tour options are available. Meals are a well-prepared mix of local and international cuisine."
