Good For You

Located on the sparsely populated island of Koh Jum in the Andaman Sea is Koh Jum Lodge, a quiet eco-resort that rests in the middle of a 12km stretch of unspoilt white sand.

With a total population of less than 1,000, this tiny tropical paradise is home to just three small fishing villages. The facilities on Koh Jum remain basic and it can only be reached by a one hour long tail boat ride, consequently the island has so far managed to escape the large-scale tourism development of its neighbours. Which is great news for Koh Jum Lodge guests.

Surrounded by coconut palms and tropical vegetation stand 16 wooden cottages designed in the traditional Andaman style with beautiful woodwork and artistically thatched roofs. Inside bamboo, rattan, cotton and silk are used to create a relaxed, modern beachside feel and all the cottages come with a private terrace (and hammock) from where you can admire your own sunset and sea views.

Good For Thailand

Koh Jum Lodge is a low-key affair owned by Frenchman Jean Michel Limandas and his Thai wife Jane along with two of Jean's school friends. Both Jean and Jane spent the last two decades working in the hotel and travel industry in Thailand and are committed to protecting and preserving the country's natural beauty.

The lodge employs only locals and they are trained in hospitality management and English. The lodge is low-impact and only local materials were used to construct the lodge and these were built by local craftsmen.

The lodge uses only traditional long tail boats to transfer guests and, in a bid to protect the marine life and fragile reef, employs only long tail boats for its marine excursions (fishing and snorkelling).

Highs

The island: Koh Jum is idyllic and utterly peaceful. If you're tired of the Thailand tourist trail then head here for some serious r 'n' r.

The cottages: Robinson Crusoe meets Wallpaper magazine in these rustic yet stylish beachside cabanas.

The beaches: Revel in the possibility that you might have the beach all to yourself - every day.

Lows

The electricity: There is none and the resort relies on two generators so don't expect to re-charge your iPod here.

The activities: If you like to be kept busy 24hrs a day then this is not the place for you.

Local Info & Activities

Capitalising on the excellent and preserved marine environment, Koh Jum Lodge can organise snorkelling trips to Bamboo Island and Phi Phi Island and can also arrange scuba diving trips through Phi Phi Islands, Krabi or Koh Lanta dive operators.

The resort can also organise tours to all the major mainland tourist attractions in Krabi province - this can be combined with your airport transfer departure.

Other activities including canoeing, fishing, mangrove and botanical treasure tours and hiking tours. The island boasts quite a high mountain (400m) covered with dense jungle that's home to a number of wildlife including monkeys, sea eagles and large lizards.

If that all sounds like too much hard work then take advantage of the "Salas" at Koh Jum Lodge for an afternoon nap, lounge by the pool or on the 5km beach or book yourself a massage.

INSIDER TIPS The 'low season' is May to October when the rains come in.

There is not much on the island so make sure you bring everything you need (camera film, medications, sunscreen, bug repellent etc..) with you.

Unlike other Thai beach getaways there are no full moon parties here so put away your glow sticks and come prepared for nothing more than some serious rest and relaxation.

The resort closes between June 1 and September 30 every year.

Sustainability

Koh Jum Lodge is a low-key affair owned by Frenchman Jean Michel Limandas and his Thai wife Jane along with two of Jean's school friends.

Both Jean and Jane spent the last two decades working in the hotel and travel industry in Thailand and are committed to protecting and preserving the country's natural beauty.

The lodge employs only locals and they are trained in hospitality management and English. Only local materials were used to construct the lodge and these were built by local craftsmen.

The lodge uses only traditional long tail boats to transfer guests and in a bid to protect the marine life - in particular the coral reef that is still fragile following the 2004 Tsunami. The resort also employs only long tail boats for its marine excursions (fishing and snorkelling).

Koh Jum Island has no electricity so the resort uses two generators (5 KW each). There is, however, enough energy to recharge a mobile or ipod in your room. The resort only uses low density lighting.

Local produce is purchased wherever possible.

Getting There

Koh Jum Lodge is located on Koh Jum ( or Koh Pu) Island, Krabi Province in Southern Thailand. The island is situated in the Andaman Sea in the area referred as Andaman Triangle or Turquoise Triangle, facing Phi Phi Island to the West (15 kms), Koh Lanta (10 kms) to the South and Krabi to the North (18 kms).

Koh Jum is accessed via Krabi. Departing from the pier of Laem Kruad 35kms south of Krabi, the resort's long tail boat will take you to Koh Jum Island, this can take between 30 minutes and one hour depending on the seasons and tides.

The shorter boat journey then sees passengers jump aboard the resort's "Songtaew" (jungle truck) for a 5km ride to the lodge whereas the longer boat journey drops guests off on the beach outside the resort.

It's worth remembering that long tail boats do not operate after 6pm.
