"This is Chhatra Sagar, a small, delightfully low-key family-run tented camp on a dam wall in rural Nimaj, halfway between Jaipur and Udaipur. With only 11 tents, it is well off the tourist trail: there's not a tour bus in sight and, despite the extravagant spectacle of the forts and palace hotels we've been staying in, it's a relief to be met at the top of the dam steps not by a posse of heavily liveried doormen jostling for a tip, but by a pair of little owlets blinking down on us from their accustomed branch in a neem tree."

"The only tented camp on a dam in India, on one of the few lakes with water, this is a marvellous, family-run oasis. The Singhs are related to virtually every royal house in Rajasthan, the mother and the daughter do the cooking - truly the best in the state - the father is the host and looks after everyone, one of the eight brothers manages the camp, and another farms the estate and takes one out on the land. Because the family owns all the land around the dam (rare in Rajasthan now), guests can walk and birdwatch in complete peace. Chhatra Sagar is a place with great style, all the tents face the water, and have fixed bathrooms and dressing rooms, but the tents themselves come down during the monsoon, so each year the floors are repainted by hand with gorgeous henna patterns. Sail on the lake, have wonderful picnics on a nearby hilltop - the views are huge and have that big-sky feel, and the local temples are so unspoilt you'll be the only person there. This is a special, chill-out nirvana on the journey between Jaipur and Jodhpur."
