The Independent, UK: "Gradually the landscape started to flatten out. The craggy mountains softened into the rolling green hills of the Breede River Valley - all whitewashed fruit farms and vine-clad slopes. Our next stop was Swellandam and the Jan Harmsgat Country House owned by Brin and Judi Rebstein. Another old farm, this time dating back to 1723, it's completely different in style, yet just as welcoming. Huddled beneath the towering Langeberg mountains, its sleek design belies its humble origins. The four guest rooms are in the old converted slave quarters, the thick stone walls and small shuttered windows keeping them cool in summer and cosy in winter. All polished concrete floors scattered with Persian rugs, ceilings of beam and bamboo, and carefully chosen antiques and paintings, it's more designer B&B think rustic guesthouse. The feel is solid yet stylish, a mix of traditional and contemporary. A living-room up in the eaves has stacks of magazines, while a hatstand provides umbrellas and panamas for guests."

Good For You
Set amongst pecan, almond and fruit orchards in the scenic Klein Karoo winelands region of South Africa is Jan Harmsgat, a historical Dutch country house that was granted as a 'freehold farm' in 1723.
This working farm offers comfortable, elegant accommodation in the farm's original slave quarters. There are four large en-suite rooms with an adjoining lounge, two loft rooms and a separate cottage. The decor is 'country chic' with acres exposed wood, enormous sofas you can get lost in and vibrantly coloured tapestries and throws.
Guests can do as much or as little as they like here although it would be foolish not to indulge in the region's fine wines. The farm is also famous for the production of a range of cheeses and preserves so it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll head home a few kilos heavier after a holiday here.
Good For South Africa
Jan Harmsgat Country House is owned by Brin and Judi Rebstein and is extremely active in the local economy through its purchasing and employment activities. The guesthouse has helped ease unemployment in the area by hiring locals - mainly women - and providing staff training and development.
In particular, Jan Harmsgat should be noted for its award-winning community project in the historic town of Swellendam. A joint venture established by Judi and local black women, this project has seen part of an old jail (located alongside the museum) transformed into a coffee shop. The project trains women from disadvantaged communities and then gives them a stake in the café.
HighsThe setting: The scenery is picture-perfect and ideal for both exploring and lazy days by the swimming pool The 'goodness': The coffee shop scheme in particular is an excellent example of how a small project can reap big rewards. The rooms: The spacious guest rooms are elegantly decorated and gloriously comfortable. |
LowsThe Size: Jan Harmsgat isn't very big and so books out fast. |

Local Info & Activities
Steeped in nearly three centuries of pastoral history, the Western Cape has a rich heritage, and while it's original settlers have long since moved on, their spirit is still evident. Many of the vineyards currently undergoing a revival produce some of South Africa's finest wines. Distinctive blends from all the noble cultivars and classic styles may be sampled and most farms readily welcome visitors for wine tasting.
You're in the heart of the South West Cape: the Robertson Wine Route, Montagu (with its hot mineral springs), the Breede River, Bontebok Park, Cape Agulhas, the De Hoop Nature Reserve (offering exceptional whale-watching in season), and the delightful town of Swellendam. The region offers a vast array of pleasurable pursuits to suit all tastes, within a concentrated area.
Swellendam
The third oldest town in South Africa, celebrated its 250th anniversary in 1995. This charming town, nestling at the foot of the Langeberg Mountain, is famous not only for its youngberries (braambessies), but also for its eclectic architecture, fascinating past and great outdoor life. The Koornlands River, ancient oak trees and stately, whitewashed homesteads add to its charm.
Only 7 km from the town is the Bontebok National Park. The nearby Marloth Nature Reserve offers day walks and overnight hiking trails through the Langeberg Mountains.
Robertson Wine Valley
The Robertson Wine valley, one of the Western Cape's best kept secrets, embraces the districts of Ashton, Bonnievale, McGregor and Robertson and is less than two hours' drive from Cape Town. It is the home of Champion horses, but it is also known for its abundance of roses. Adorned by the beautiful Breede River and Langeberg Mountains, the Valley's beauty lies not only in its special location, but also in the relaxed hospitality of its people.
The Robertson Wine Valley has 32 members, including 11 co-operatives, 14 estates and 7 private producers. These members all produce some of South Africa's finest wines.
Cape Agulhas
Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa and natural beauty, is roughly 100km from Jan Harmsgat Country Guesthouse. Built in 1848 this massive lighthouse is still operational today, warning ships away from the treacherous coastline. Guests can visit the tower and there is a museum and a tea room
INSIDER TIP/S
When To Go
South Africa can be visited comfortably any time. Winter (June to September) is cooler and drier and is the best time for wildlife-watching. Spring is the best time to see the wildflowers. The times to avoid are school holidays when accommodation is heavily booked and prices can soar. If you are travelling during this period then you must book accommodation well in advance.
