good for you
Rekero Camp is situated at what is widely recognised as the prime site within the Masai Mara Game Reserve, close to the confluence of the Mara and Talek River , ten minutes from the main Wildebeest crossings during the migration. The camp overlooks large pools populated with hippo and crocodile, and offers some of the finest big cat viewing in Africa.
A 7 tent safari camp, between July & October each year, Rekero Camp is in the prime location to witness one of the world's most amazing wildlife spectacles, as over a million wildebeest and two hundred thousand zebra come thundering north across the Tanzania border in search of fresh grasslands in Kenya's Masai Mara.
It is not unusual for wildlife to gaze in at you as you snuggle comfortably in your safari ten - but don't worry, there are numerous night watch men whose job it is to protect you from the game!
Between the morning game drives and the afternoon siesta, which you will definitely need because there is so much activity, sit at the lunch table and watch the circle of life taking place around the Talek River.
At the end of the day you'll join your fellow adventurers for drinks around the camp fire to reminisce about the wonders you have encountered.
You'll most likely see more animals in one day here than you have ever seen in your entire life. Like the wildebeest you'll need to watch out for the crocodiles though!
good for kenya
The Rekero Camp team feels very strongly about the preservation of Kenya's unique and precious wildlife and environment and aims to ensure the local Masai community derives direct financial benefit from tourism activity.
Rekero's goal is to improve the general standard of living of the local community through education and healthcare; encouraging sustainable use of natural resources and educating the community in using fuels that do not destroy local forests; and developing alternate income sources to help reduce the dependence on crops and livestock, which creates animal-human conflict.
The accommodation has no electricity, just solar lanterns and kerosene lamps.
Funds raised are divided equally between supporting education and conservation initiatives.
Highs
- The migration: Recognised as the 'greatest animal show on earth' the annual wildebeest migration happens here between July and October each year and Rekero is ideally situated to witness this amazing phenomenon.
- The community: Observing the various ancient Masai ceremonies in the village will give you a rare insight into one of the oldest cultures on earth.
Lows
- Local challenges: Despite its best efforts there is a huge challenge in educating the local community when the cost of fuelling a home via an eco-friendly source is five times that of charcoal and the use of wood is free. Both of the latter options eventually destroy the woodland/ forest habitat.
- Getting there: Although the environmental footprint of the camp is extremely low, most guests opt to arrive by short hall flight.
Rooms
Rekero Camp comprises seven spacious tents, all of which can be configured into double, twin or triple accommodation, designed to cater for up to fourteen guests comfortably. These are large tents that you can comfortably walk around and are decorated with African textile bed coverings and rugs, crisp white cotton sheets and handcrafted wooden furniture.
Each tent has a terrace which overlooks the Talek River, with the added luxury of en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and indoor safari showers.
There is no electricity in the tents, but solar lanterns and kerosene lamps are provided providing true African safari ambience.
During the months of July - October (Migration season) an additional seasonal mobile camp called Rekero Kidogo is set up consisting of six tents, similar though slightly smaller than those at Rekero Camp. Two tents are situated close together as a family unit and one is suitable for triple-share. Rates are the same as the Rekero Camp.

Rekero's safari chefs produce appetising 'farmhouse' meals, which are a skilful blend of flavours and cuisines from both East and West.

Sustainability
Rekero's mission statement is "To promote Kenyan tourism through the provision of a high quality safari experience encompassing an insight into animal behaviour, flora, fauna, and local cultures."
Rekero's environmental policy is best summarised as follows:
"Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints"
This area represents an important animal corridor and combined with the surrounding lands making up the Masai Mara Conservation Area provides an extended eco system which is vital to the preservation of the wildlife within Masai Mara National Park itself.
Rekero aims to foster an environment where wildlife and people live in harmony.
Preserving the Masai culture, and improving the health, education, and general well being of the people while developing awareness of the importance of protecting the wildlife and habitat to ensure a successful tourism future is core to its philosophy.
To date, donations from guests and funds from the camp have provided rainwater systems to enable clean drinking water for local school children as well as much needed basic educational materials such as desks and books.
The camp has also sponsored a number of pupils through secondary school and university.
Rekero's founder, together with the Koyaki/ Lemek Wildlife Trust has built and run a field internship school to enable secondary school students to be trained as professional safari guides, keeping the revenue from tourism in the community.
The camp, in collaboration with local Masai land owners, and tour operators have successfully created a new conservation area and is a great example of what can be achieved in harmony with the local community.
The camp aims to minimise it's carbon footprint by having the tents all free of electricity. Hot water showers are solar heated and limited to about 3mins per person.
