How We Rate Our Hotels
Every hotel is given a mark out of five stars and each one of our reviews details the strengths and weaknesses of the hotel. This way, you can make an informed decision about where you choose to stay.

Environmental footprint
The score a hotel receives will depend on the energy it uses, its recycling policy, whether it sources local products and labor and its all-round carbon emissions. For some places, becoming energy efficient is difficult, so we try to be forgiving.

Community Connection
A hotel owned and operated collectively by indigenous people in the Amazon would score high on this, as would a local B&B run by folks who know the area and employ locals, helping their guests to get to know the local culture and people. A western-style all-included resort dropped in the middle of the Brazilian jungle and staffed by city folk would score badly.

Architectural Conservation
In many places, particularly the developing world, the conservation of heritage buildings is understandably a low priority. We reward tourism entrepreneurs who have the vision to carefully restore heritage buildings for guests and locals to enjoy. Many of our heritage hotels are UNESCO or National Trust listed and this is the type of hotel that scores well here. This rating does not apply to all of our hotels as most of our hotels are not housed in buildings of historical importance but instead adhere to strict eco guidelines.
