This holiday offers three distinct Brazilian experiences that will give travelers a taste of what this vast and varied country offers. Because Brazil is so huge, this trip inevitably involves some internal flights. We encourage you to use our carbon offsetting service to reduce the carbon footprint left by this trip. One thing to remember – the Uakari Amazon Lodge does not accept guests under 10 years of age.

The Journey

This trip begins in Brazil’s “Marvelous City,” Rio de Janeiro, where you’ll stay in a restored 19th century mansion in a neighbourhood full of artistic life bordered by the city’s lush Atlantic rainforest. After X days of sun and samba, you’ll jump on a plane and head north to Natal, where you’ll find a distinct culture and spend some more time soaking up the sun.

Now that you’re in holiday mode, you’ll be ready for the next adventure – the Brazilian Amazon. You’ll fly to Tefé via Manaus, where you’ll be picked up and taken on a 2-hour boat ride to Ukari Lodge, a floating eco-lodge in the Amazonian jungle, where you’ll spend a week exploring and relaxing in this unique wilderness.

Trip Length

This is a two-week holiday, with three days in Rio, four in Natal and one full week in the Amazon. For those travelers short of time, the trip can be adjusted for shorter stay in the Amazon. Contact us if you’d like help with that.

When to Travel

Brazil is hottest in the summer, which is December though to the end of February, but Rio’s weather is warmish throughout the year, while in the north it’s quite hot all year round. The Amazon environment alters quite dramatically depending on whether you travel in the wet season (April to August) or the dry season (September to March). The dry season offers the rich spectacle of fish and their predators that are clearly visible in the shallower water, while in the flooded season, you will float under the boughs of the trees on a canoe, observing mid-tree species such as orchids and tree sloth at close range.

Price

This trip starts from US$3,200 per person (based on two sharing) and includes all accommodation and transfers. It does not include international flights in and out of Rio de Janeiro.

Breakfast is included at both Casa 32 in Rio and Manary Praia. All meals, tours, guides and transfers to and from Tefé are included in Uakari’s rates.

The price is variable depending on the season, and includes three internal flights as well as your airport transfers. For a full range of transport options in the Amazon, check Uakari Lodge’s page in the hotel section of our site and contact us with your preference, or any questions.

What to Do

...in Rio

One of the world’s great cities, you won’t find trouble amusing yourself here, and if you run out of ideas your gracious hosts at Casa 32 will gladly point you in the right direction. During your three days in Rio, you’ll have time to lie on the beach with the glamorous crowd at Ipanema Posto 9, sip caipirinhas and dine in the chic nightspots of Leblon, dance samba at Lapa’s clubs, explore the amazing botanical gardens and take silly pictures of yourself at the Christ statue.

Your quiet, elegant bolthole is tucked just a quick cab ride away from the tourist action in the artsy neighbourhood of Cosme Velho.

...in Natal

Your hotel Manary Praia, is right not the beach at Ponta Negra, which boasts welcome blue waters and stretches of golden sand. The best restaurants, bars and nightspots in Natal are in the Ponta Negra neighborhood, and there are also plenty of shops to buy local handicrafts, clothing, music and other goods.

Known as the "city of the sun", Natal's annual average temperature of 26¼C ( 78¼F ) together with the constant breeze, ensure continual sunny days. Its warm white-sand beaches are very swimmable, while the golden sand dunes that surround Natal are great for exploring in a dune buggy or just for catching a stunning view of the sunset.

The city is very cosmopolitan, having been home to the indigenous Brazilians, along with Portuguese, French, Dutch, and the descendents of African slaves. The people are warm and welcoming, and boast a rich and varied culinary culture, including seafood, country style beef, manioc flour, tapioca, brown sugar and coconut sweets, manioc flour, tapioca, and plenty of exotic fruits. The lively bar scene will have you dancing the traditional forro well into the wee hours.

...in the Amazon

The activities at Mamirauá are designed to maximise your opportunities to observe the reserve’s wildlife. Observation of wildlife is easy throughout the year, but the species observed will vary depending on season. During outings you will probably see bands of red howler monkeys (whose dawn concerts will wake you each day), the scarlet-faced white Uakari (flag species of the reserve), capuchin monkey and squirrel monkeys, many birds species, caimans during the dry season and Amazon pink river dolphins in the water.

You’ll head up the main river in a large motorboat, then upon entering the forest you’ll form a small group led by a local guide who will ensure your adventure is both safe for you and the jungle environment, as well as being incredibly stimulating and enjoyable.
